An open letter from one of the founders:
As an Innkeeper myself, I’ve struggled with the invisibility of our segment of the travel industry. Independent Inns comprise small boutique hotels, professional bed and breakfasts, unique places to stay, guest ranches, and other family-owned properties across the United States. An inn is not franchise or a big brand, and an inn is not a “side hustle” to rent out a room outside of the health and safety regulations that govern transient accommodations. Inns are licensed, insured, health and safety inspected, and tax-paying contributors of their local communities.
Our small businesses often serve as a cornerstone of an economic ecosystem of other small businesses in our communities: wineries and breweries, activity providers, farm to table restaurants, attractions, and even gas stations and country stores. These small businesses employ the single parents, college students, and family members in their communities. They are engines of the economy.
There are 70,000 of these independently-owned lodging properties in the United States. Millions of people rely on them for their livelihoods.
And yet, they are overshadowed: ignored by technology providers who don’t provide open systems, trampled on by middlemen Online Travel Agencies who force themselves in between the properties and their guests to take a cut of the profits, lacking the organizing power of the true size of their group, and buried under the weight of ever-increasing costs of operations and regulations.
The recent pandemic has only highlighted the unique challenges faced by these professional small businesses: The frustration these businesses feel, and the economic realities they face. MyFavoriteInn.com grows out of this environment. Our goals are simple:
- Create a place where guests can find, share, and book their next stay at a professionally managed, independently owned inn.
- Provide marketing opportunities for inns that don’t destroy their income, so they can provide for themselves, their employees, and their communities.
- Highlight and celebrate the unique contributions these small businesses make to our society and our world.
Independent Inns hold a special place in our world: we elope there, we celebrate our relationships and milestones there, we escape and decompress there, we discover new natural wonders there, and we make new lifelong friends there. MyFavoriteInn.com is a grassroots effort to celebrate and share these inns.
The site is free-for-life for inns to be listed.
